About the Itasca County Sheriff's Office... The Itasca County Sheriff's Office has 64 employees working as Jailers, Dispatchers, Clerical and Road Deputies. We have employees that have specialized training to work in the following areas; D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), pre-employment background investigation, Boat and Water Safety, Snowmobile Safety, Drug Task Force, Emergency Response Team, Dive Team, and special enforcement projects.
The Sheriff's Office has divided the county into 4 patrol districts. Deputies live and work within their assigned patrol district. This is a concept of community policing that Itasca County implemented many years ago.
The Sheriff's Office is supported in their duties by the Itasca County Sheriff's Posse and the Itasca County Dive Team. These two groups are highly trained volunteers who contribute their time to search for lost persons, recover drowning victims and provide their time to community service work.
The Itasca County Jail... Itasca County has a 59-bed main jail and a 48-bed jail annex.
Civil Process Division...
Deputies assigned to this division are responsible for carrying out the Sheriff's responsibility for executing all processes, writs, precepts and orders issued or made by lawful authority.
Records Division The Records Division is responsible for processing and maintaining crime and arrest records, traffic accident reports, citations and related documents in order to provide information to other divisions within the Sheriff’s Office, the County Attorney’s Office, the Court System, other law enforcement agencies and to the general public.
How to join our department... Applications are available through the Itasca County Sheriff's Civil Service Commission. The Civil Service Commission advertises openings in the local newspapers in the county and the Minnesota Pool Employment line. All the positions in the Itasca County Sheriff's Office fall under the Civil Service Commission hiring practices. These positions are: Deputy Sheriff, Dispatcher, Jailer and Criminal Records. Applicant testing consists of a written test, background investigation, oral screening, physical exam (hiring conditional), physical strength and agility, and psychological exam (hiring conditional).
Salary and benefits... Starting salary is approximate for the following positions: Deputy - $18.67 per hour, Dispatcher - $17.70 per hour, Jailer - $17.70 per hour, Record - $17.23 per hour. Itasca County has an excellent benefit package: paid vacation, paid sick leave, life and health insurance, public employees retirement pension program and dental insurance.
