CURRENT VACANCY EXISTS IN:  One Regular F/T position in the Land Department

 

DUTIES:

 

1.         Timber Sale Preparation and Administration:

a.  Assist in developing prescriptions for forest management based on objective, verifiable

      data about the basic biophysical elements of the forest environment.

b.  Assist in accomplishing forest regeneration requirements and designing sales to protect

      roadside beauty, wildlife, and environmental quality. 

c.  Cruise timber, develop sale contracts, pre-sale meet with loggers, approve access road

      and landing locations, scale wood and establish accurate sale and property boundaries.

d.  Prioritize timber sale locations according to condition of timer and multiple use values.

e.  Inspect logging progress periodically to insure contract compliance to cutting

      regulations.

f.  Make routine decisions in the field as questions arise from loggers.

g.  Responsible for final inspection and closing the sale according to policy.

 

2.         Integrated Resource Information:

a.  Provide assistance in maintaining current integrated resource information.

b.  Responsible for forest inventory alterations as assigned.

c.  Responsible to integrate biophysical data and information with DNR Ecological

      Classification System (ECS) – Native Plant Communities and incorporate the

      information and products into prescription writing.

d.  Implement forest certification requirements.

e.  Responsible for knowing basic analysis tools on personal computer such as ArcView.

f.  Working knowledge of Timber Guardian program and general use software required.


 

3.         Forest Development

a.  Assist in the identification of forest development needs.

b.  Assist with the implementation of forest treatments needed to regenerate forests,

      increase timber yields, improve wildlife habitat, or protect forests from insects, disease

      or fire.  Includes location of and directing construction of forest access roads.

c.  Analyze management alternatives by computer and hand computations to determine

      which will produce the highest economic return and the highest timber yields OR the

      highest ecological return and/or highest non-commodity benefits.  Base analysis on

      objective, verifiable data about the basic biophysical elements of the forest

      environment.

 

4.         General Land Management and Related Activity:

a.  Assists Assistant Land Commissioner with general land management activities

      including but not limited to land and timber appraisal and review; locate and/or GPS

      property lines, roads and trails; land management planning; and public meetings as

      determined by Land Commissioner.

b.  Assist with the general administrative duties such as issuing licenses, easements and

      various permits.

c.  Assist, as requested, with land sale and land exchange process.

d.  Prevent and arrange for clean-up of unlawful dumping.

e.  Provide assistance with recreation management and law/ordinance enforcement.

f.  Responsible for field work as it pertains to meeting county requirements of grant in aid

      trails.

g.  Coordinate with other landowners on recreational developments and work toward

      resolving any disputes with landowners and clubs.

h.  Involvement in public relations activities to improve the public=s awareness of sound

      forest management and its benefits is required.

i.  Responsible to attend forestry related meetings periodically as determined by the Land

      Commissioner.

j.  Provide assistance to other public agencies as needed and as assigned by Land

     Commissioner.

k.  Perform other land management duties as delegated by Land Commissioner or

     Assistant Land Commissioner.

 

5.         Perform other duties as delegated.

 

6.         Regular attendance on the job.

 

WORK HOURS:  Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm, overtime as necessary and approved.

 

WORK LOCATION:  Itasca County Land Department, 1177 LaPrairie Avenue, Grand Rapids, MN, 55744-3322 and Itasca County Forestry Districts (Districts 1-7).

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must have a B.S. degree from an accredited college or university in Forestry or Forest Management (must attach transcript) OR A.S. Degree in Forestry or Forest Management (must attach transcript) and four (4) years of forestry work experience.  The four (4) years work experience must include any combination of timber sale preparation and administration and/or reforestation work and/or forest land classification and/or forest inventory; work experience or education (must attach transcript) working with personal computer software; have a valid drivers license; successfully pass a physical examination and pre-placement screen, contingent upon a job offer; must obtain a MN non-commercial pesticide applicator=s license within one year of employment.

 

Excellent public relations skills and oral and written communication skills.  Ability to work well with others; ability and willingness to follow rules and procedures; ability and willingness to follow directives from supervisors.

 

Preference for:  additional work experience, beyond the minimums, in timber sale preparation and administration and/or reforestation work and/or forest land classification and/or forest inventory; related land management work; education (must attach transcript) or experience working with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, ArcSDE, ArcView, GIS; work experience in a Minnesota county land department.
